A course on the effects of climate on the ecology of organisms. The specific focus is on: (1) the definition, description and measurement of global abiotic factors such as radiation, temperature, atmospheric moisture and precipitation, winds and currents; (2) the fundamentals of dynamic, long-term meteorology and short-term weather prediction from observations of natural coastal phenomena such as cloud and wind patterns; (3) the interaction of coastal environmental factors with plants and animals; (4) the impact of human-caused influences such as the destruction of coastal habitats and consideration of the possible effects on coastal ecosystems that could result from global climatic change.
