One semester of oceanography and/or marine biology or permission of instructor.
THIS COURSE BEGINS ON CAMPUS AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY, AND ENDS AT SHOALS MARINE LAB ON APPLEDORE ISLAND!
An intensive survey of the biological and geological history of the oceans, starting with the record of ancient oceans and life preserved in the rocks of central New York, followed by a transect and examination of the history of the Appalachian Mountains, ending with the oceanography and marine biology of the Gulf of Maine at Shoals Marine Lab. Topics will include:
- Geological and biological history
- Major physical and biological processes
- Major taxonomic groups of marine organisms and their evolutionary history
- The dynamics, patterns, and processes of the evolutionary processes that have shaped these groups and their history.
*Cornell students will have the opportunity to continue their studies during the fall semester on campus at Cornell for another 2 credits of independent study.
