About Creek Farm
In May 2006, Cornell signed a 50-year lease with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF) for two buildings and a dock on a mainland property known as Creek Farm Reservation, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. One of these buildings is Creek Farm Cottage, a 19th century estate house overlooking tidal Sagamore Creek constructed by Arthur Astor Carey in the late 1880s. Designed by Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow and built in two phases, Creek Farm Cottage is a large (11,000 ft) local landmark that appears on maps and navigation charts of the region, although it is not yet listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Creek Farm Reservation is located in a residential neighborhood of large homes adjacent to state and local land preserves; the land on which it is located was once part of the farm belonging to the first Royal Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, whose stately 18th century home is a New Hampshire state historic site across the street from Creek Farm Reservation. Creek Farm, in turn, is located across from Appledore Island, approximately 7 miles away by boat. This beautiful and inspiring property is ideally situated to support SML’s current programs.
