Getting to Shoals Marine Lab is a 2-step process: Once you've arrived in Portsmouth, NH -- we'll take care of getting you to Appledore Island!

STEP 2: Plan to meet a Shoals vessel in Portsmouth to get to Appledore Island.

ALL passengers (except Celia Thaxter's Garden Tour passengers*) travel to Appledore Island aboard Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) vessels from a dock in Portsmouth, NH (click on the map for locations). FOR SUMMER 2013: Major bridge construction in Portsmouth is going to affect vehicle and vessel traffic patterns in downtown Portsmouth, please follow this link for more information. We will post dock location information for all passengers as it becomes available. Stay tuned by referring to the specific instructions below, AND consult our online calendar/boat schedule for all departure and arrival information.

STUDENTS (You do NOT need to make a boat reservation):
ON THE FIRST MONDAY OF A COURSE
:
Plan to arrive in Portsmouth by 11:30AM; departure time is 1:00PM.
ON THE LAST MONDAY OF A COURSE:
Plan to depart Appledore at 10:00AM; return time to Portsmouth is 12:00PM.

ADULT and FAMILY EDUCATION PARTICIPANTS (You do NOT need to make a boat reservation):
ON THE FIRST DAY OF A PROGRAM:
Plan to arrive in Portsmouth at least 1.5 hours before departure time.
ON THE LAST DAY OF A PROGRAM: Plan to return to Portsmouth ~ 1.5 hours after the scheduled departure time.
Consult our online calendar/boat schedule for exact arrival and departure times--you will also receive specific travel instructions and information as part of your electronic confirmation packet.

LONG-TERM PARKING (48 hours or longer) IN PORTSMOUTH, NH (make plans well in advance!)
Shoals does not provide long-term parking in Portsmouth, NH! Please GO TO THE DOCK FIRST to drop-off your luggage; look for a Shoals staff member for guidance. Allow adequate time to park your vehicle, grab a taxi (or walk) and return to the dock for departure. For assistance, contact Pam Boutilier (shoals-lab-east@cornell.edu) or (603) 430-5220 (M-F).
