She walks beside the silent shore. The tide is high, the breeze is still; No ripple breaks the ocean-floor. The sunshine sleeps upon the hill. (from The Pimpernel by Celia Thaxter)
A century ago Appledore Island was a summer retreat for some of America's most celebrated artists, writers and musicians. Celia Thaxter's hospitality and the beauty of the Isles lured these artisans to her parlor; her garden became Appledore's centerpiece, showering color and fragrance upon an austere landscape. The Shoals Lab and its volunteers recreated and maintain Celia's Garden as it existed in the 19th century. Participants will learn about Celia's life and the history of the garden. Sight-seeing cruises, birding and time to enjoy the setting sun will be included to help make this a memorable weekend for all!
Program hosted by dedicated volunteers and supporters of Celia Thaxter's Garden.
