RESEARCH at SML section: Welcome!

SML invites visiting researchers (faculty, graduate students) to utilize the Isles of Shoals environment for their research, and take advantage of the resources offered by Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island. Resource allocation is based upon the needs of SML's academic program; this includes vessel availability, lab space and housing.

Please send Hal Weeks a research proposal 12 weeks prior to the start date of the project. The proposal may be mailed,  faxed or sent electronically:

Once a project is approved, the following is required:

  • Copies of collecting permits relevant to expected research activities
    (Researcher provides to Hal Weeks: hjw7@cornell.edu)
  • Signed liability waiver and acceptance of fees
    (SML provides once all research and logistics details are confirmed)

    (The liability waiver is not needed for Cornell and UNH researchers)
  • Signed confirmation letter
    (SML provides once all research and logistics details are confirmed)
