Research Internships in Field Science (RIFS)

SML received 7 years of funding from the National Science Foundation for an REU Site program. In 2008, we will inaugurate RIFS to replace the NSF funded internship at SML. Our primary goals in developing RIFS are: 1) to engage more Cornell and UNH faculty as research mentors; and 2) to make RIFS available to Cornell and UNH students who already have taken a credit course at SML. In addition to marine ecology, RIFS offer new opportunities for field research, such as behavioral ecology of insects, plant ecology. or microbiology. Each intern works with a faculty mentor on a research project, collects and analyzes data, and prepares a final project report.

RIFS last seven weeks. Each intern will receive a stipend ($250/week), plus housing and meals. We will retain weekly journal club discussions, evening meetings with guest speakers, and the symposium to present research results to the entire island community.

Applications will be available in December. If you're interested, or if you have questions about RIFS, contact us at shoals-lab@cornell.edu, and put RIFS in the subject line! We will notify you when the application form is ready.
