Shoals Marine Laboratory is undertaking three new campaign initiatives to ensure the strongest possible future: scholarships and internships, sustainability, and buying Appledore Island!
• Scholarships and Internships—By supporting SML
undergraduate scholarships you will enable us to expand our financial
aid program to include all students in need. We know that for some
students each year the cost of attending our programs prevents them
from coming to Appledore. The currently challenging economy will only
increase student needs. We must change this as quickly as possible so
that we can bring the cost of our programs within everyone’s reach.
Your support for our internship programs helps us bring top students to
Appledore to conduct research in field biology, ecology, behavior, and
conservation. Our unique sustainable engineering internships—now
entering their fourth season—attract and train top students in civil,
environmental and electrical engineering.
• Sustainability—As
we transform our island operations to both demonstrate and improve
sustainable practices, we invest in everyone’s future. On Appledore—a
95-acre rock in the sea—everything we do demands energy awareness and
resource conservation of every visitor. From this extraordinary first
hand experience, SML’s students bring home lessons in sustainable
practices that translate into everyday life. We need your help to
double our wind and solar power systems so that we can further reduce
our dependence on fossil fuels. We also need help to expand our
alternative sanitation facilities (i.e., composting toilets) that will
allow us to reduce our use of chlorine and water.
• Appledore Island—To
ensure SML’s long-term viability and legacy of extraordinary academic
programs, we are committed to buying the 89 acres on Appledore Island
that we currently rent from Star Island Corporation (SIC). This will
strengthen both SML and SIC. It will also help to protect the future of
the Isles of Shoals Archipelago, for it will be better to have two
strong organizations with similar long-term commitments to the
stewardship of these unique and wonderful islands. With a generous
anchor gift from Hank and Nancy Bartels, the opportunity to purchase
the property on Appledore is at last within our reach. We need your
generous help to meet the appraised price of $1.85M.
