SUPPORTING SML section: Ways to give!

Shoals Marine Laboratory is undertaking three new campaign initiatives to ensure the strongest possible future: scholarships and internships, sustainability, and buying Appledore Island!
• Scholarships and Internships—By supporting SML undergraduate scholarships you will enable us to expand our financial aid program to include all students in need. We know that for some students each year the cost of attending our programs prevents them from coming to Appledore. The currently challenging economy will only increase student needs. We must change this as quickly as possible so that we can bring the cost of our programs within everyone’s reach. Your support for our internship programs helps us bring top students to Appledore to conduct research in field biology, ecology, behavior, and conservation. Our unique sustainable engineering internships—now entering their fourth season—attract and train top students in civil, environmental and electrical engineering.
• Sustainability—As we transform our island operations to both demonstrate and improve sustainable practices, we invest in everyone’s future. On Appledore—a 95-acre rock in the sea—everything we do demands energy awareness and resource conservation of every visitor. From this extraordinary first hand experience, SML’s students bring home lessons in sustainable practices that translate into everyday life. We need your help to double our wind and solar power systems so that we can further reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. We also need help to expand our alternative sanitation facilities (i.e., composting toilets) that will allow us to reduce our use of chlorine and water.
• Appledore Island—To ensure SML’s long-term viability and legacy of extraordinary academic programs, we are committed to buying the 89 acres on Appledore Island that we currently rent from Star Island Corporation (SIC). This will strengthen both SML and SIC. It will also help to protect the future of the Isles of Shoals Archipelago, for it will be better to have two strong organizations with similar long-term commitments to the stewardship of these unique and wonderful islands. With a generous anchor gift from Hank and Nancy Bartels, the opportunity to purchase the property on Appledore is at last within our reach. We need your generous help to meet the appraised price of $1.85M.
Annual Gifts
Gifts of any amount for current use help to defray
the present-year expenses of the Shoals Marine Laboratory. Annual
Fund Gifts empower the director to determine areas that are most
critical to the lab's mission and deploy funds to support them.
If you receive a pledge card from Cornell University or UNH, a designation
to the Shoals Marine Laboratory is an annual gift.
Donor-Designated Gifts
Gifts toward the purchase of equipment or construction
of facilities provide opportunities for individuals to support their
special interests and leave a mark on the Shoals Marine Laboratory
in a permanent, tangible way.
Endowment Gifts
An endowment consists of invested gifts, the
earnings on which are used to support the lab, year after year.
The investment earnings on Program Support Endowment provide steady
income to enhance the lab's ability to provide a quality academic
program and attract top-notch field educators. Earnings on Scholarship
Endowment provide scholarship aid to ensure that qualified students,
regardless of their economic background, have access to the Shoals
field experience. Supporting endowment is the best way to ensure
that students will be learning at the Shoals Marine Laboratory in
the decades to come.
Planned Gifts
Gifts other than cash contributions are planned
gifts. Planned gifts such as bequests (leaving assets through an
executed will), life income agreements (giving assets while retaining
income for the rest of your life), gifts of life insurance, stocks
and securities, or real estate may have significant tax advantages
and allow you to make a larger gift than you might have thought
possible. Contact the Shoals Marine Laboratory at (607) 255-3717
to find out more about the benefits of planned giving.
